My 2008

Time for my annual "reflections on the past year" post. So here goes.

This year I...

-Went on an epic journey to the Emerald City Comicon where I got to meet Wil Wheaton, Ed Brubaker, Tim Sale, and others in the delightful spectrum of nerdery. I think Wil Wheaton was impressed with our awesome disposable camera.

-Went on a voyage across the Pond to London and Paris. Whilst there, I met Stephen Fry. I saw Avenue Q and Timon of Athens at the Globe theatre. I saw the Crown Jewels, and the Rosetta Stone. Paris provided the sites of the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Catacombs, the Arc De Triomphe. Also saw a dead body being dragged out of the Seine.

-Finally got to see Sam Roberts in concert in London. Which was awesome, because y'all know he's my favourite. Never seem to catch him in Vancouver.

-Maintained the reputation for attending midnight screenings. I was first in line to see: The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones, X-Files:I Want To Believe, and Quantum of Solace. Well, not quite first for Quantum of Solace. But pretty close.

-Learned how to play chess (properly) and joined a bowling league. I discovered the secrets to solving the rubik's cube.

-Found in myself a tremendous passion for Social Media and Marketing. I started a blog, became a twitter addict, and got over my resentment of facebook. I read more marketing books than I ever thought I would.

-Went back to my birthplace of Alberta. It was nice to see the Rocky Mountains again.

-Had the silly idea that three jobs at one time would be a good idea. Turns out that wasn't such a silly idea after all.

Ok so last year was pretty good. I had a lot of fun. I gained friends, I lost friends. All in all it was a very reflective year for me. I was able to sort out my own personal goals and priorities. Even if I didn't do that much this year, at least I had fun. My main resolution last year was to be happier. I think I accomplished that.

This year I want to take better care of myself. I don't want to lose weight necessarily, but I would like to eat healthier, and start scheduling time in the week to go to the gym. I'd also like to make sure I don't miss out on any opportunities to get out and gain more valuable experiences. Starting now.

Well, it is 12:30 and I'm still in my Star Trek pyjamas. Maybe I'll start getting in a few minutes. ^_^

PS: Wow, epic tagg-ery batman! Coolbeans

Sounds like you did a whole lot in 2008... and best of all, you remember the good parts esp. well :).

Oh, btw, I finally mailed you letter earlier today. Err, I had to reseal it last minute but I think it should make it okay... next time, I'll just use a larger envelope rather than stuffing a normal one....

Actually, now that I think about it, I sorta need to demessify things so I can find my stationery properly...

Ah, well, Happy New Year!

Oh, I remember the bad parts even better. But I wouldn't want them circulating the internets.

What about you? What was your high-light (or low-light) or 2008?

Well, a lot happened....

Overall, the thing that hit me the most was how difficult it has been for me to put things into words, and related to that, to act according to my own intentions.

That's both a high and low light, because it's a big problem, but I'm getting better at overcoming it partly because I noticed but even before I could rationalise it, I was working on it.

I think, then, that 2008 was overall a step towards greater personal soverignty, i.e. true self-mastery (as opposed to the fake stuff that is sold in cults).

I think total self-awareness should be anyones ultimate goal. Without that, you really have nothing.

Several of my highlights were directly connected to the low-lights as well. Funny how life works out like that.

That sounds quotable:

"Total self-awareness is the ultimate goal. Without that, you really have nothing."

Awesome. I have made my footnote in history!

But I think it's true. I don't see how you could really achieve happiness or success without being totally aware of your self. :)

Doh!

Ah, so, THAT explains my massive unhappiness and failure! :D

Well, I make it sound like a joke but I actually do think I've been severely lacking in self-awareness for most of my life, but recently I've been correcting that, with parallel improvements in both departments.

So, yeah for increased self-awareness!
